Our Mission
Our Vision
Founder of Peru Hikers: Daniel Mayta
Daniel Mayta, founder of Peru Hikers, was born in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. As a Quechua man, he developed a deep, lifelong connection to Pachamama (Mother Earth), viewing himself as a child of Pachamama and fully embracing the traditions of his ancestors. His journey into tourism began as a teenager, but it was his time working as a porter on the Inca Trail that truly shaped his path. For two years, Daniel not only learned the land but also witnessed the harsh realities faced by porters, chefs, and guides, including mistreatment and unfair compensation. Motivated by a desire to improve these conditions, he worked while studying tourism, determined to create a better future for himself and his community. At 21, he became a licensed guide, leading travelers through iconic cultural and historical sites such as Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, and alternative treks that connect visitors to the Andean way of life. Daniel’s philosophy is, “We came from Mother Earth, we live in Mother Earth, and we go back to Mother Earth. Let’s take care of Mother Earth, and she will take care of us.” This mindset has driven his success and vision. His dedication and expertise earned him recognition from two top adventure travel companies, opening international doors to meet tourism leaders in Canada, Bolivia, and other countries, where he shared his cultural insights. With over 15 years of experience, Daniel founded Peru Hikers with a mission to offer authentic, sustainable travel experiences. Under his leadership, Peru Hikers has become known for its commitment to authenticity, sustainability, and community empowerment, offering unique journeys that unveil the hidden gems of the Andes. Daniel’s lifelong dedication to preserving the region’s cultural heritage and natural beauty invites travelers to connect deeply with the true spirit of Peru.
Co-founder of Peru Hikers: Isao Mayta
Isao Mayta Perez, co-founder of Peru Hikers, hails from the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas—a region renowned for its awe-inspiring landscapes, vibrant history, and profound cultural legacy. Born into a Quechua-speaking family, Isao was immersed in the traditions, stories, and wisdom of his ancestors from an early age. His deep connection to the Andes and its natural beauty has shaped his life’s purpose.
As a young boy in Cusco, Isao’s entrepreneurial spirit emerged. He began selling postcards of Machu Picchu and miniature llama and alpaca dolls to travelers from around the world. These early experiences not only sparked his love for tourism but also became his classroom—teaching him English, fostering his passion for cultural exchange, and instilling a deep appreciation for sharing his heritage with visitors.
Driven by ambition, Isao pursued studies in accounting and tourism at Cusco National University while continuing to work in the bustling streets of Cusco. However, his love for nature and adventure soon guided him toward a career that allowed him to merge his cultural roots with his passion for the outdoors.
Isao’s journey in tourism began as a guide, working for some of the most prestigious adventure companies in the Cusco region. Over eight years, he led countless expeditions, immersing travelers in the magic of the Andes and the Inca Trail. Having completed an impressive 559 treks to Machu Picchu, Isao earned a reputation as an exceptional guide, admired for his storytelling, expertise, and dedication to creating unforgettable experiences.
With a wealth of experience and a vision for meaningful and sustainable travel, Isao co-founded Peru Hikers. Guided by his personal philosophy, “If you give, you get,” Isao aims to inspire travelers to engage deeply with Andean culture while respecting the land and its people.
Co-founder of Peru Hikers: Miguel Mayta
Miguel Mayta Perez, co-founder of Peru Hikers, is a native Quechua speaker who was born and raised in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a land steeped in history and cultural richness. Growing up in this remarkable region, Miguel developed a deep connection to his heritage and a profound respect for the natural beauty of the Andes.
At just 17 years old, Miguel began his career in tourism as a porter for various adventure travel companies. His determination and passion for growth quickly became evident as he balanced work with studies. After 3 years, he earned a chef certification and began working as a chef on the Inca Trail and other alternative treks in the Cusco region. Over the next 17 years, Miguel honed his craft, becoming a highly skilled and respected trek chef, creating meals that delighted travelers even in the most remote locations.
Never one to stop learning, Miguel pursued further education in tourism, eventually earning a certification as a professional tour guide. For the past four years, he has worked as a guide for several renowned adventure travel companies, sharing his deep knowledge of the Andes and his ancestral heritage with travelers from around the world.
Miguel’s extensive experience across roles—porter, chef, and guide—gave him a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by those who make these journeys possible. Witnessing the unfair treatment and lack of recognition for porters, chefs, and guides, he was inspired to create change. This vision led him to co-found Peru Hikers, with a mission to provide better working conditions, fair pay, and respect for the backbone of every trek experience.
Through Peru Hikers, Miguel is not only committed to creating unforgettable adventures to Machu Picchu but also to preserving and sharing the culture of his ancestors. His goal is to honor his heritage while ensuring that every contributor to these treks is valued, respected, and treated with dignity.
