Day 1: Cusco to the Andean Highlands of Cuncani
Our journey begins with an early 6:00 a.m. departure from Cusco, traveling by private van to the town of Lares. This scenic four-hour drive is the gateway to our Andean adventure. After a hearty lunch, we start a five-hour uphill hike through lush valleys populated by llamas and alpacas. The path leads us to our first campsite in the small Quechua community of Cuncani. This evening offers a unique opportunity for a cultural experience, connecting with local people, learning about their traditions, and sleeping under a brilliant canopy of stars.

Day 2: Conquering the Sicllaqasa Pass
Today is the most challenging day of this high-altitude trek. After an early breakfast, we begin a five-hour ascent to the highest point: the Sicllaqasa Pass at 4,800 meters. The trail takes us through diverse microclimates with breathtaking views of snow-capped Andean peaks like Qolqecruz and Sahuasiray. Reaching the summit is a moment of pure triumph. From there, we descend for about an hour and a half to our lunch spot. The final stretch is a downhill walk to our campsite, which offers stunning views of the remote Urubamba canyon and the Milky Way.

We greet the morning with a hot cup of coca tea before our final hike. Today is a pleasant three-hour descent through a fertile valley adorned with native flowers. Our trek concludes at the Puma Marka community, where we enter the famous Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our private transport will then take us to Ollantaytambo for lunch and a chance to witness impressive Inca history. In the afternoon, we board the Expedition train for a scenic 1.5-hour journey to Aguas Calientes, the town nestled below Machu Picchu, for a comfortable night’s rest in a hotel.

Day 4: The Crystal City of Machu Picchu

Afterward, you will have free time to explore the Inca citadel at your own pace. If you have pre-booked a ticket, you can climb Huayna Picchu mountain. Later, we return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the afternoon train to Ollantaytambo. There, our private bus will be waiting to transfer you directly back to your hotel in Cusco.

Packing smart is key to a great trek. We provide a duffle bag for 8kg of your personal items, which our mules will carry. You will only carry a small daypack.

We pick you up directly from your hotel, as long as it is located in the center of Cusco city.
Do I need to be very fit for this trek?
This is a demanding 34km hike. Day two is particularly challenging. We recommend being in good physical condition before you start.
How important is acclimatization?
It is crucial for your health and enjoyment. We strongly recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) before starting the Lares trek 4 days to adapt to the altitude.
What is the best way to prevent altitude sickness?

Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover personal accidents, medical expenses, and emergency repatriation, including helicopter rescue.

What kind of food will I eat?

How much weight will I carry in my daypack?
You will only carry essentials like water, snacks, a rain jacket, and your camera. The rest of your gear (up to 8kg) goes in a duffle bag carried by our mules.
What happens if I cannot finish the trek?
Our team will assist you to the nearest town. If you recover, you can rejoin the group in Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu. All extra costs incurred are the traveler’s responsibility.
Are the tents shared?
Yes, we provide spacious 4-person tents that are shared by only two hikers for your comfort. You can request a private tent for an additional fee.
Is there clean water to drink?
Yes, our team boils, filters, and cools water for you every day starting from the first lunch. You just need to refill your bottle.
How much time do we spend at Machu Picchu?
You will have a 2-hour guided tour, plus additional free time to explore on your own. In total, you’ll spend about 5 to 6 hours at the site.
Are trekking poles allowed in Machu Picchu?
No, trekking poles are not permitted inside the Machu Picchu citadel.
Can I bring my large backpack to Machu Picchu?
No, only small daypacks (up to 25L) are allowed inside.
What time is the train back to Cusco?
Departure times vary based on availability but are usually in the mid to late afternoon. This ensures you have ample time to experience Machu Picchu.
Are we dropped off at our hotel after the tour?
Absolutely. Our private transport will meet you at the train station in Ollantaytambo and drop you off directly at your hotel in Cusco.
What is the weather like?
