1. Is the Rainbow Mountain hike very difficult?
The hike itself is moderate, but the extreme altitude makes it challenging. We strongly recommend reading our guide on how to avoid altitude sickness in Peru before your trip.
2. How long do I need to acclimatize in Cusco?
We recommend a minimum of 2-3 days in Cusco (3,400m) to allow your body to adjust to the altitude before attempting this hike.
3. Can I do this hike the day after I arrive in Cusco?
We strongly advise against it. Hiking to 5,200 meters without at least two days of prior acclimatization in Cusco poses a significant health risk. Your safety is our priority
4. What is the best time of year to go?
The dry season, from April to October, is the best time for a Rainbow Mountain hike. It offers clearer skies, vibrant colors, and better trail conditions.
5. What happens if the weather is bad?
Andean weather is unpredictable. We operate the tour in rain or light snow. The colors may be less vibrant, but the landscape is still dramatic. We will only cancel the tour in extreme weather conditions that pose a safety risk.
6. Are hiking poles necessary?
They are not essential, but highly recommended, especially for the descent. They help with balance and reduce the impact on your knees. You can rent them from us in Cusco.
7. What happens if I get altitude sickness on the trail?
Your guide is certified in first-aid and trained to identify and manage symptoms of altitude sickness. We carry an emergency oxygen tank and will assist you immediately. If necessary, we will help you descend safely.
8. What kind of training do the guides have?
All our guides are licensed professionals with extensive experience in high-altitude trekking. They undergo regular training in first-aid, CPR, and emergency oxygen use.
9. What makes your tour safer than cheaper options?
We prioritize safety over volume. Our groups are small, our guides are highly trained, and we carry emergency oxygen on every single trip. We don’t cut corners when it comes to your well-being.
10. Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover high-altitude trekking and emergency medical evacuation.
11. What is the group size?
We keep our groups small, typically with a maximum of 12-14 people. This ensures you receive personalized attention from your guide.
12. Can I rent a horse?
Yes, local community members offer horse rentals for a portion of the ascent. This can help you conserve energy. You will still need to hike the final, steeper section to the viewpoint on foot.
13. How much cash should I bring?
We recommend bringing around 80-100 Peruvian Soles in cash for renting a horse (if desired), buying snacks, water, or souvenirs, and for using the toilets.
14. What are the toilet facilities like?
There are basic toilet facilities at the trailhead and at the lunch spot. We recommend bringing your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There are no facilities along the trail itself.
15. Is there a vegetarian or vegan option for lunch?
Absolutely. Our buffet lunch includes a variety of delicious options suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Please let us know of any dietary requirements when you book.
16. Will I have a phone signal or Wi-Fi?
No. You will be in a remote mountain area with no mobile phone signal or internet access for the majority of the day. It’s a perfect chance to disconnect.
17. How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially during the high season (June-August), to secure your spot.
18. What is your cancellation policy?
We offer a flexible cancellation policy. Please refer to our booking terms and conditions for detailed information.
19. Where will you pick me up from?
We offer complimentary pickup from any hotel, Airbnb, or hostel located in the historic center of Cusco.
20. What if I am a slower hiker than the rest of the group?
That is perfectly fine. Our tours are not races. Because we operate in small groups, our guides can manage different paces easily. They will ensure the group stays together and that everyone feels comfortable and safe. The goal is for you to enjoy the journey, not to rush to the top.
