Briefings: Preparing for Your Peru Trek

Just to keep you informed, all trek briefings are held at our office or your hotel. This typically occurs the night before your adventure at 6:30 PM. If this time slot does not work, please contact our team. We will help arrange another time for you. These briefings last about 30-45 minutes. You will also receive your duffel bags during this session. This prepares you for your Inca Trail adventure or other treks.

If you have already booked the Short Inca Trail with a hotel, a separate briefing is not needed. Our office staff will check all required details during your check-in. This streamlines your preparation for the Machu Picchu trek

Get ready for an unforgettable trek! During your briefing, you will receive duffel bags. These bags carry your personal belongings and clothing. Our porters will carry these bags for you. They will be returned to you at each campsite. This allows you to focus solely on enjoying your journey. Your duffel bag should have maximum dimensions of 66cm in length by 36cm in width (or 2 feet in length by 1 foot in width). There is a weight limit of 7kg. Allocate 4kg for personal belongings and clothing. Dedicate 3kg for your sleeping bag and pad. This helps you make the most of your trekking adventure.

At Peruhikers, we offer a unique service. We pick you up directly from your hotel. If your hotel is in the center of Cusco City, we arrange your pickup time during the briefing. This time is set with your guide. Please note that pickup times may vary. This depends on traffic and previous pickups. Expect a window of 30-45 minutes.

Cusco is an old city. It has narrow streets and challenging passageways. This can make it difficult for cars to pass. Smaller hotels and Airbnbs are often on hillsides. These have long, steep climbs. It can be hard to carry luggage there. We recommend booking a hotel that is more easily accessible. For some treks, pickups are available in the Sacred Valley.

Here are the pickup locations for each trek:

It is crucial to be completely honest with your guide. Inform them about any health conditions or concerns. Our guides are trained in first aid. However, they are not medical experts. We partner with a clinic in Cusco. They can provide additional assistance to our team if needed.

Ultimately, you decide if a tour is suitable for you. We recommend consulting your doctor. Confirm your ability to travel and participate in planned activities. Your doctor can also advise on necessary vaccinations and medical precautions. Peruhikers does not offer medical advice. It is your responsibility to evaluate potential risks. Consider requirements based on your circumstances and fitness level. Read our blog How to Avoid Altitude Sickness in Peru? for essential guidance.

In case of inclement weather, we will collaborate to schedule a new trip. This may result in additional fees. We strive to keep costs low. We use as much of the original itinerary as possible. If health issues prevent you from continuing a hike, a porter will accompany you. They will go to the nearest road. The porter remains with you until transportation arrives. This transport takes you to the nearest health clinic.

Embark on an unforgettable journey to Machu Picchu. Choose between a morning or afternoon visit. Your Machu Picchu entrance ticket grants exclusive access. Explore this historic site during your designated time slot. Please note that once your session concludes, Rangers will politely ask visitors to exit the site.

The morning session runs from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The afternoon session runs from 12:00 PM to 5:30 PM. If you have tickets to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will have extra time until 2:30 PM. If you wish to spend the entire day at Machu Picchu, we can include an afternoon session ticket. This requires an additional fee. Consider our Machu Picchu Tour for a complete experience.

For the best views of Machu Picchu, many tourists hike nearby mountains. This can be done after their main tour. If you are interested in hiking Huayna Picchu, booking is essential due to its popularity. It typically takes 45 minutes to ascend and 45 minutes to descend. Tickets are for specific time slots. The first session is from 7-8 AM, and the second is from 10-11 AM. We recommend booking the first session. This allows ample time to enjoy your guided tour before the hike starts. You will navigate the trail independently. Your guide will direct you to the starting point. This ensures a safe and enjoyable experience.

Machu Picchu Mountain is less crowded than Huayna Picchu Mountain. However, it requires a longer hike. Expect 1.5 hours to reach the top and another 1.5 hours to descend. There are two available time slots: 7-8 AM and 9-10 AM. We recommend the latter. If you’ve booked a 4-day Inca Trail Trek or Explore Cusco, you cannot participate in this hike. This is due to time constraints with your tour of the ruins. By choosing to hike either mountain, you will have additional time. This allows you to explore the ruins once the hike is completed.

To ensure your safety and peace of mind while traveling, travel protection is crucial. Unexpected medical emergencies or illnesses can occur before your trip. This can result in lost payments for non-refundable expenses. In remote locations, emergency medical transport and air ambulances can be expensive. Your regular health insurance may not cover these costs. Purchasing personal travel insurance is essential. Your insurance should cover personal accidents, medical expenses, air ambulance services, and repatriation costs. It must cover all other related expenses. Many insurance companies offer travel protection plans online. It is crucial to have coverage for adventure activities like the Classic Inca Trail.

Our group tours are designed for individuals of all ages. They cater to various hiking abilities. Some members may move at a different pace. However, we have a knowledgeable guide who ensures everyone is included. The group’s needs are met throughout the journey. Please don’t worry; your safety and enjoyment are our top priorities. We believe everyone deserves an incredible Peruvian adventure.

It is essential to keep track of your personal belongings. Do this throughout your journey. Be attentive to where you leave your items. Retrieve everything from the bus, tent, restaurant, and other places. When hiking, leave everything alone. Other trekkers or groups may pick it up. They might not know who it belongs to. Peruhikers is not responsible for lost items on the trail.

The weather in Peru varies significantly by region. It is generally hot along the coast. During the dry season (April to August), it can get chilly. This occurs early morning and at night. The Andes of Cusco have two primary seasons: wet and dry. The wet season runs from November to April. It is usually warmer overall. The dry season runs from May to October. This season has hot, clear days but cold nights. Predicting Peruvian weather accurately is challenging. You might experience clear, hot days in the wet season. Hail storms can occur in the dry season. But that’s the beauty of Peru! For the best time to visit Machu Picchu, consider the dry season.

The main reason for altitude sickness is ascending to high altitudes too rapidly. Your body needs time to adjust. This is due to the reduction in oxygen at different elevations. This adjustment process is called acclimatization. It usually requires 1 to 3 nights at the current altitude. Understanding how altitude affects you is key to a successful trek.

To prevent altitude sickness, it’s best to take it slow. Do this during the first 24 hours. Do not push yourself too hard. If you are above 10,000ft (3,047m), increase your sleeping elevation by 1,000ft (305m) daily. Take a rest day for every 3,000ft (915m) of height gained. If you experience moderate altitude sickness symptoms, go higher once they improve. If symptoms worsen, move to a lower altitude immediately. Everyone acclimatizes at different rates. Staying hydrated is crucial. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. A high-carbohydrate diet can also help. Take your time when first arriving at altitude.

Diamox (acetazolamide) can help improve breathing and oxygen uptake. It works by changing the acid balance in your body. This is similar to the natural acclimatization process, but faster. Dexamethasone, a steroid medication, can reduce swelling. This includes swelling in the brain. It can potentially reverse adverse effects of altitude. Always consult your doctor before taking any preventive medications.

In Latin America, tipping is customary. A tip of around 10% is common for service providers. This includes servers. While tipping is not mandatory, it is expected. Anything extra shows your satisfaction. This gesture greatly benefits the people caring for you. If your trekking guide and support team did an exceptional job, tipping is greatly appreciated. The suggested amount varies by trek. It is recommended that each hiker contributes to a collective pool. The amount for the guide is more personal. It is the most welcomed gesture. Ultimately, the decision to tip is up to you. It depends on what you are comfortable leaving.

Trekking Crew Tipping Suggestions (Per Hiker, Per Day):

  • Inca Trail (4 and 5 days): Porter (60-80 soles), Chef (160 soles).
  • Note: This specific data is for per person per day. The original source seems to imply amounts per trek for chef/porter, so I’ve clarified based on common practice.

If you are an international traveler heading to Cusco, be aware that the airport in Cusco only operates domestic flights. You must disembark in Lima. You will go through Customs there. Then, you continue your journey to Cusco. This applies even if your flight to Cusco is on the same day with the same airline. Remember to get your bags in Lima. Check them back in before your flight to Cusco.

Flying is the best way to get to Cusco. Several airlines offer flights. LAN (LATAM) tends to be more expensive. However, it offers the most options and flights. Be aware that flight delays and cancellations are common. This is due to Cusco’s high altitude. Landing is difficult, and inclement weather can halt air traffic. Taking a bus is strongly encouraged if you travel from a city closer to Cusco, like Puno. The trip can be long. However, buses in Peru are very well-maintained and comfortable. If you are traveling from Lima, the bus journey can take up to 20 hours.
